Love love loved this! Kelela is such a special artist. I got put onto her on the Saint Heron compilation album Solange released in 2013 and Cut 4 Me came out shortly after that, which is wild because it sounds like it came out today. I played "Bank Head", "Go All Night" and "Send Me Out" into the ground but "Cherry Coffee" has turned out to be one of those songs I revisit and will play on repeat the most and I think it's for a lot of the reasons you mentioned about her understanding of musical resonance. I also love the connection she has with her audience, aside from being captivating on the stage, she sees us. I saw her at Gov Ball in 2018 and the crowd, like at most festivals was a little "ehh", she performed "Rewind" and I was the only one dancing, bopping around and singing along and she pointed at me and said "YES! YOU GIRL" I love her so much and I'm so glad to see her get her flowers!

Omg thank you so much!!! Reading your comment made me so excited, because this is what she does, like she does something to you and when you know other people have felt it or feel it, it connects, it's special. "Cherry Coffee" is also my favourite one from cut4me, it is soooooooooo breathtaking ... the build up, her airy soft voice, the bell in the background everything!!!!!!! Thank you for your comment, this made my day honestly. And the part about her connection with her fans and she saw you and pointed at you (!!!!!) you must have gave her so much in that moment. Do you know this song? Reminds me a bit of cherry coffee, but like the darker cousin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pgg54XH9qI

Ohhh! I haven't heard Danger Zone, nice deep cut. I forgot to mention, did you ever hear her podcast episode on Song Exploder where she talks through how she wrote and produced "Rewind"? If not, you'll love it, it really gets inside of her process in how she approaches creating songs. https://songexploder.net/kelela

thank you :)))) intention (to me) is everything ... it is impactful because it connects. Things can be random, but I don't know, whenever I know someone is intentional it moves me.

I really loved the way you described and explained interludes, it was so nicely put! I am not super familiar with the work of Kelela, I have a song of hers I love in one of my playlists and I have acquaintances that love her very much also because they resonate with her creativity, craft, and how everything ties to her black womanhood (the friends I am talking about are black women themselves). Loved the last video you embedded, truly makes me want to dive more into her work! I am currently obsessed with Khruangbin and when I have an obsession with a musician or band, I really need the time to truly indulge in their work and listen to their work over and over but I'll deffo check her out properly when all the Khruangbin craft has been fully indulged :)

They make what the west would call “world music” not at all r&b but their music takes inspiration from different genres and it’s truly a beautiful voyage ! My songs of theirs are “So we won’t forget”, “love international”, “connaissais de face” and “les petits gris” 🤗
